Iowa 4-H’ers Get Health Care Reform ‘Civics Lesson’ While Attending National 4-H Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Health care reform protests on Capitol Hill gave four Iowa 4-H’ers a live-action civics lesson and a glimpse of history being made. The youth, Iowa’s delegates to the 80th annual National 4-H Conference, observed Americans sharing their voices during protests on Capitol Hill March 20 prior to passage of the health care reform bill March 21.
“Being in Washington, D.C., during the passing of the health care bill was historic because it demonstrated our first amendment rights. It also showed that we, the people, have the civic duty to protest if we do not agree with the system,” said Iowa delegate Grant Bargfrede, 18, of Ankeny.

Added Sara Rockow, 18, of Fort Dodge, “I was able to observe this historic event because of 4-H. 4-H has given me many opportunities to grow as a leader and a citizen.”
The other Iowa delegates who attended the conference from March 20-25 were Emma Christianson, 18, Lake Mills, and Natalie DeBerg, 18, Burlington. ISU Extension 4-H Program Specialist Annette Brown accompanied the youth.

Christianson said, “Attending National 4-H Conference taught me a lot about citizenship. I learned how important it is to be an active citizen by voting, communicating with your legislators or doing service learning to better your community. If we as citizens can do this, we can really make a difference.”

DeBerg added, “I learned about the importance of citizenship and that contributing to one’s community and state is vital for the growth of Iowa 4-H.”

The Iowa delegates also had the opportunity to meet with their legislators to discuss state 4-H programs. They met with Sen. Tom Harkin, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Rep. Dave Loebsack and advisees for Rep. Tom Latham and Rep. Leonard Boswell.

Some 300 youth and adults representing 4-H programs across the country, Canada and Puerto Rico gathered to exchange ideas, gain knowledge to share back at home and develop recommendations to help guide the future of 4-H programs nationally and in the their communities, Brown explained.

This year’s theme, “.COM -- Citizens on the Move,” focused on citizenship and youth civic engagement, she said. Through conference sessions and facilitated discussions, delegates learned and shared information on current trends and issues relevant to 4-H and youth programs, building effective partnerships, creating innovative 4-H programs, expanding the use of technology, working with diverse groups and impacting community needs.

The conference delegates also discussed how 4-H programs could further engage in citizenship efforts and develop young people to meet the challenges of the future. The recommendations were delivered to U.S. Department of Agriculture and 4-H officials.

The Des Moines Register and Monsanto sponsored the Iowa youth’s trip.

Bunk Beds Needed

Apparently the kids have come from a pretty rough place, and this family is in need of some bunk beds in order to make room for all the kids that are now under their roof. Clothing Selection Workshop

An opportunity has surfaced to assist our 4-Hers to better understand how they can make clothes work for them. We will be talking about styles, shapes, colors… all those things that can help a person emphasize the “good” about their body shape and de-emphasize the “not-so-goods,” which we all have. This is NOT a “sales event” but an opportunity to learn why some things look great on one person and not so good on another and options for what we can choose instead. We’ll have door prizes and other give-aways and lots of fun trying on clothes!

Essay Contest

Dear Colleagues,

I wanted to pass along information regarding an essay contest that 4-H’ers from across the state might be interested in entering. The contest is a wonderful opportunity for 4-H youth to highlight their incredible communication/writing skills and their understanding of civic issues. For over 25 years the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, Iowa Department of Education, and the State Historical Society of Iowa have co-sponsored this statewide essay contest for 6-9 grade students.

Essay Focus:
Students are encouraged to choose a woman, preferably from Iowa, from any historical period, past or present, and write about the accomplishments of her life and how she has made a difference to the student and to society in the social justice and civil rights arena. Although Iowa women are preferred and encouraged, the subject of the essay may be a woman from another state or another country.

Timeline:
Essays and entrance forms must be e-mailed to women@iowa.gov no later than Friday, January 29th, 2010.

Awards:
Cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winner in each of the 6-7th grade and 8-9th grade divisions (first place - $100, second place - $75, and third place - $50). Special awards are given to the best essays on women in science and engineering. All winners will be honored in a ceremony at the State Capitol and introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

New Iowa 4-H Website

The new Iowa 4-H Web site makes it easier for Polk Countykids and teens to connect with 4-H and Iowa State University Extension online. The site, www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/, includes an interactive map to help kids and teens connect with 4-H, project links, games, event calendars, an interactive networking site for members and more, explained Shelly Greiving. Find a 4-H Club uses interactive Google Maps to help kids find 4-H contact information within their county. This feature will be expanded over the next few months to include links to all Iowa 4-H clubs.

Project Pages include links, exhibit ideas and community service ideas for each 4-H project area.
“Kids and teens can get involved in these projects, right now, right here in Polk County, ” Shelly said. Why 4-H features current 4-H members and why they have chosen 4-H. Roll over each of their photos to see their quotes about the impact 4-H has had on their lives.

Teen Network is a ning site specifically for teens (ages 13-18) who are in 4-H to connect, network, share photos and videos and talk about their 4-H experiences. It’s a community with content generated by 4-H youth for 4-H youth. Teens must be 4-H members to participate in this social network. The new 4-H site also includes an expanded search feature and information for parents, teachers and 4-H volunteers, Shelly added.

Fundraiser at Bass Pro Shops

Hello!

I have a great way that Bass Pro can help your non-profit and/or cause this Christmas season. You provide the volunteers and the donation canister and we will provide you and your 3-4 volunteers wrapping paper, boxes, bows, tissue paper, tape, and an area with a couple tables to set it all up on. Then you offer our Customers “Free” Gift Wrapping for donations. You would also be welcome to bring a banner and/or literature about your organization to hand out. I’m in the process of making a big sign that says something like, “Free gift wrapping provided by________. If you would like to support our cause with a donation we appreciate it!”.

I will be signing groups up for 1-2 days each on a first come, first serve basis. My goal is to get every hour we are open from Black Friday to Christmas Eve signed up for. At this moment here are the dates that are NOT AVAILABLE to sign up for.

November 27th-28th and December 12th-13th.

Please email me with a 1st choice set of 2 days and a 2nd choice set in case the first is taken. Also, please note that any of the volunteers you may bring MUST be 18 or older.

This note is a reminder of the hunter safety class scheduled for October 28th, 2009. The class is scheduled from 5:00PM to 9:00PM at the Dragoon Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, 4857 NE 110th Avenue, Elkhart, IA.

Directions:
From I-35 take the 1st Ave Exit to Ankeny. Go east on 1st Ave to NE 46th Ave. Take NE 46th Ave north to 110th Ave. (Gravel Road) Take 110th Ave east about two blocks. The Dragoon Chapter clubhouse is on the south side of the road.

Give the Gift of Grain to Benefit Iowa 4-H

Crop producers who want to support Iowa 4-H Youth Development have another option besides writing a check or donating cash. They can give the gift of grain. Giving grain is a viable option for donating to the 4-H program through the Iowa 4-H Foundation, said Albert Grunenwald, the foundation's associate director. Self-employed farmers who donate grain to the Iowa 4-H Foundation not only benefit youth across the state, but also reduce their self-employment tax and increase their income tax savings, Grunenwald explained.

The grain must be placed in the Iowa 4-H Foundation's name to be sold by the Iowa 4-H Foundation, Grunenwald stressed. Farmers are welcome to transfer the grain at their local elevator, co-op or grain merchant.

Dear Friend,

My name is Leah Churchman and I would like to introduce myself as Chair of the Book Tree Committee for this year’s Festival of Trees and Lights which will take place at the Polk County Convention Complex (5th & Grand) November 25-29. I am writing to share my family’s story about our experiences with the services Festival supports and to ask for your help in filling the Festival’s Book Tree with new books that can be given to young patients throughout the year.

What is the Festival of Trees and Lights?
The Festival is an annual event supporting the Child Life and Advocacy & Outreach programs at Blank Children’s Hospital. The Book Tree stands more than 18 feet high and holds thousands of donated children’s books which will be given to patients and family members.

What services do the Child Life and Advocacy & Outreach programs provide?
The Child Life and Advocacy & Outreach programs have a direct impact on children and their families at Blank. Child Life Specialists provide recreational, therapeutic, developmental, and educational programming for hospitalized children and their families in order to make the healthcare experience as positive as possible. The Center for Advocacy and Outreach is a statewide resource for education and information regarding children’s issues. Both of these programs are provided to everyone at no cost, and no one is ever turned away for any reason.

How do these programs directly impact families?
My family has personally experienced how important these programs are to hospitalized children, their parents, and their siblings. Due to a severe illness, my daughter, Jess, spent extended periods of time at Blank which, of course, also affected me, my husband, Drew, and Jess’ twin brother, Kade. The Child Life specialists not only ensured Jess had everything she needed to pass the long hours, but also provided Kade with books, craft supplies, toys, and trips to the playroom; planned birthday parties; dropped off holiday goodies; and made frequent visits to Jess’ room to check on her progress. Their kindness and compassion helped soften the edges of difficult situations our family faced.

State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council Now accepting Applications

Strengthening Youth involvement in State Government Des Moines, IA-

With the passage and signing of HF315 this spring, the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC) was formally established in the Code of Iowa. SIYAC, which originated under the aegis of Governor Tom Vilsack, consists of 15 to 21 diverse students who represent youth throughout the state. Applications are being accepted now for the 2009-2010 school year. Motivated students from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. SIYAC members benefit from leadership and civic engagement experience, numerous trainings, and opportunities to network with statewide organizations, communities, legislators, and youth across the state. SIYAC members have tackled a range of issues facing Iowa’s youth, including school drop out rates, health and nutrition, teen drinking, bullying and improvement of after-school programs. As representatives of SIYAC, members are expected to identify issues and engage their communities to promote youth development and involvement. SIYAC holds quarterly meetings in Des Moines. Mileage and meal reimbursements are provided for meetings and related SIYAC activities. 4-H Volunteer Forum Oct. 1-4

AMES, Iowa -- 4-H volunteers from Iowa have a close to home opportunity to receive training and network with other 4-H volunteers in Lincoln, Neb., this fall. Volunteers from 12 states will converge on Lincoln in October to learn more about their importance to the organization.
Registration begins this month for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension’s North Central Region 4-H Volunteer Forum Oct. 1-4 at the downtown Holiday Inn. The theme is “Giving Them Our Best.” About 300 adult 4-H volunteers from 12 states are expected.
“The forum will focus on what it takes to be a good 4-H volunteer,” said Chris Gleason, Iowa State University Extension 4-H program coordinator.

The volunteer forum rotates each year among Nebraska, Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois.
The event will feature 70 educational workshops, many of which will focus on 4-H’s three areas of emphasis -- science, engineering and technology; healthy lifestyles; and life skills. Three keynote speakers are scheduled, said Doug Swanson, extension educator of professional development in the Nebraska state 4-H office.

The registration fee is $200 for the full forum or $110 per day. Early-bird registration is from June 1 to Aug. 15. Late registration will be open until Sept. 15 with an additional $50 fee.

Iowa 4-H Center holding free open house

Kids and families who are looking for summer camp opportunities should try the Iowa 4-H Center. Free open house events are set for June. The open house events are June 3 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Camp program specialist Traci Haselhuhn said to RSVP to (515) 795-3338 by the Saturday prior to the open house. The Iowa 4-H Center is located on 1,100 acres along the Des Moines River near Madrid, just off highway E-57.

“Join us for a wagon tour of camp, and try out the climbing tower and zip line. You also can enjoy a hot dog roast and s’mores before a campfire program with the camp staff in our 250-person capacity Pinecone Amphitheater,” said Haselhuhn.
The open houses include time for kids and families to meet the cabin counselors and camp directors and ask questions about day camps, overnight camps and the overall camp experience, Haselhuhn said.

“Young day campers can become familiar with the camp and the staff before they arrive for their first day of camp. This helps alleviate ‘first day’ homesickness,” Haselhuhn said. “Parents get a chance to see where their day campers will be all day long. Since we provide transportation to and from day camp, this may be the only chance for parents to actually visit the camp.”
The Iowa 4-H Center offers age-appropriate activities to help youth master skills in a wide variety of interests, including a climbing wall, high ropes, zip lines, a team challenge course, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, creek walks, outdoor cooking and camping skills, GPS, nature exploration, fishing, archery, air rifles, arts and crafts, drama and sports. Campers can choose to focus their time on one topic or try a little bit of everything the camp offers.

The 2009 camp brochure and registration information are available on the Web at www.iowa4hcamp.com. “You can register online or you can download and print a paper registration form to register via U.S. mail or fax,” Haselhuhn said.
The Iowa 4-H Center is a retreat center owned by the Iowa 4-H Foundation and operated in conjunction with the Iowa 4-H Program, Iowa State University and ISU Extension.

The Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute (IAYI) is quickly approaching. The four day leadership conference is held on the ISU campus for sophomores, juniors and seniors in high school who are interested in agricultural. This conference is packed full of opportunities for youth to explore the depths of agriculture, network with industry professionals, and develop leadership skills. The conference will be June 8-11, 2009 and only costs $50 due to the sponsorship of agricultural businesses and leaders!

Operation: Military Kids Summer Camps

Operation: Military Kids and the Dept. of Defense's Joint Family Support Assistance Program (JFSAP) are pleased to announce multiple camp opportunities for military kids this summer.
Five residential camps exclusively designed for military kids are scheduled throughout the summer at the Iowa 4-H Center, near Madrid, Iowa. Eligible campers are the dependent children, dependent stepchildren, or siblings of Iowa's Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, or Marines and include Guard, Reserve, or Active-duty. Accepted campers will pay a registration fee of $25.00, the remainder of the camp costs will be covered by the OMK Camp Initiative grant.

July 12-18 Ages 15-18

OMK Summer Camps are designed as fun retreats full of activities to aid military kids in building resiliency and coping skills in a safe environment. During Challenge activities, including a high ropes course and climbing wall, creek walks, and campfire reflections, campers will have the opportunity to interact with other military kids facing similar stressors, develop and strengthen their communication skills, reflect on their own situations, and look outside themselves to a larger world and their ability to impact that world.
Campers will spend their mornings sampling an activity from each of the camp's five main program areas: outdoor camping, shooting sports, challenge course, waterfront, and camp craft. In the afternoon they will go swimming and participate in programming designed just for Military Kids. Evenings include campfire programs, skit night, and other crazy themed all-camp events.

Announcing Stitch This!, a 16-hour fashion design competition for Iowa high-school youth inspired by the hit TV show “Project Runway”. The competition will involve teams of youth working together to deconstruct wedding dresses and design them into new wearable garments, which will culminate into a runway-style fashion show during the 2009 Iowa State Fair. Greetings Friends of 4-H,

We're writing today to share concerns facing 4-H in Iowa. Budget cuts are happening everywhere, but one significant cut will affect the 4-H program. The Iowa House passed the Regent's budget yesterday with a cut of $361 million to education. ISU is slated to receive $184.9 million which represents a 12.82% cut. This is significant because ISU's cut is larger than that of the other regents' universities. The budget bill "Senate File 470" is currently at the Senate and will then go to conference committee. We know preliminary plans are to cut approximately $4.5 million from Extension and $500,000 from the 4-H program. You can make a difference. We all know the value of Extension and 4-H to Iowa. Help us by sharing your passion for these programs and explaining specifically how they benefit you, your family, and your community.

These are difficult times for many. However, the proposed cut for ISU and the resulting plan to balance the reduced budget by cutting Extension and 4-H programs is unnecessary and an unfair burden - threatening the future of Iowa's youth. Please help us by: Contact your legislators THIS WEEK by phone or e-mail (it only takes a few moments) (http://www.legis.state.ia.us/aspx/Legislators/LegislatorInfo.aspx) Encourage them to restore the cuts in Senate File 470 to 4-H and ask them to insert language in the budget bill that prevents Extension and 4-H from absorbing such a great share of the cut.

PLEASE NOTE: 4-H is funded through the Board of Regents (those we've talked to have stated that they thought 4-H was funded by education and that "education was fine." This is not the case.) $500,000 would be an investment in our future and this will be paid back many times by the wonderful things our 4-H youth and alumni are doing.

Specifically, if you know people in these counties: Palo Alto, West Pottawattamie, Polk, Johnson, Dubuque or Fayette ask them to personally contact their legislators in the House and Senate Leadership about these cuts.

Write a letter to the editor As 4-H youth, parents and alumni you have powerful stories to share. We have prepared two sample letters here that you may use and include your own personalized message. Tell of the impact 4-H has had on you and your community.

Bekah Ash, who recently signed with Hallmark to use her imagery in a line of greeting cards, will also be showing works. AMES, Iowa – Nine wedding dresses, 36 teenagers and two days at the Iowa State Fair. That’s the pattern for Stitch This!, a 16-hour fashion design competition for Iowa high-school youth.
Inspired by the hit TV show “Project Runway,” the competition will involve teams of youth working together to deconstruct wedding dresses and design them into new wearable garments. Stitch This! will culminate in a runway-style fashion show during the 2009 Iowa State Fair. The competition is sponsored by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.
The grand prize winning team of teens will have the opportunity to share their talents with Michele Beschen, host and creator of “Courage to Create,” “B.Original” and “B.Organic” TV shows. Beschen recently was featured on “Rachel Ray.” The winning team and project will be featured in a segment on “B.Organic” during the fall/winter 2009. Youth will learn about developing their creative ideas and nurturing their talents.

“The Iowa 4-H Stitch This! event will be a fun opportunity for youth across the state to express their creativity, design style and fashion sense,” said Shelly Greving, marketing coordinator for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “Besides, we had to do something with all those wedding dresses.”
The nine dresses had been donated to the Iowa 4-H Foundation for an auction at the 2008 Iowa State Fair, but they didn’t sell, Greving explained.

A way to excel“We also hope that youth will catch a glimpse of what 4-H is all about. Teens have many different ways to excel in any individual 4-H interest area,” she said.
Stitch This! will take place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21-22 at the 4-H Exhibit Building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. Youth can apply in teams of four, and nine teams will be selected to compete, Greving said.

Here’s how the competition works: Each team will be assigned a wedding dress. Over the course of two days, each team will take the dress apart and will use their creativity to design and construct a wearable garment from the pieces. Each team will be paired with an ISU Textiles and Clothing student who will provide direction and overall expertise on patternmaking and construction.

“We are looking forward to this exciting new youth event for the 2009 Iowa State Fair, sponsored by 4-H. Stitch This! will bring youth together in an innovative way,” said Gary Slater, CEO/manager of the Iowa State Fair.

To apply, youth teams need to submit a written application online at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/StateFair/stitchthis.htm (or print off the PDF form and mail it in), as well as upload a video application to YouTube and e-mail the video link to iowa4h@iastate.edu. The video then will be posted on the 4-H YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/iowa4h.

Applications are due by June 1Teams will be selected by July 1 and will be announced at the State 4-H Youth Conference. All Iowa high school youth who have completed grades 9, 10, 11 or 12 are eligible to apply. At least one youth on each team must be a 4-H member. This scholarship fund was established in the memory of Mike Samuelson by the generosity of his friends and family.

Mike had three passions in his life; his family, farming and Iowa State. Mike had the opportunity through Iowa State and agriculture to make many friends and touch many lives. He will always be remembered by those that knew him as a caring, friendly and hard-working man.

The scholarship is in the amount of $1,000.00 with the check made out to the recipient and Iowa State University. This scholarship will be awarded to a central Iowa graduating senior attending Iowa State University with a major in the College of Agriculture who excels in the following criteria:

My name is Erin Newbury and my husband and I recently adopted a black lab puppy from the animal rescue league. We have found that we are unable to give him enough time and attention and are looking to give him to a good home. "Henry," as we call him, is about 6-7 months old and is very calm as far as labs go (he just loves to be with his people). He is potty trained and kennel trained and can sit, lay down and ring a jingle bell to tell you he has to go potty! Henry is a good boy and deserves more than we can give him. Hi Phillip,I thought maybe this would a good outlet to include for our fund raiser. This fund raiser is called "PAINTing Dreams" and is an AjPHA Presidential Project. ALL money raised stays here in Iowa for the Make-A Wish Foundation Iowa Chapter. Brittney Kincaid (4-H member) is the Iowa Paint Horse Youth Club president and the youth club members are selling tickets for a chance win this gelding which was donated by Gregg & Sandra Reisinger -APHA #1 Breeder of Performance Horses.

The Youth Club is trying to grant a wish which is $5,000.00. Anyone interested in tickets can call or email me and I will make arrangements. Dear Coaches,
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the 2009 ISU Spring Youth Livestock Judging Contest. We look forward to hosting a quality event as you continue preparation for the state contest. The contest will consist of 8 classes of cattle, sheep, and hogs and three sets of oral reasons. The teams will consist of four members where all individual scores contribute to the team score. Each school is welcome to bring more than one team as well as extra individuals. All contestants are eligible for individual awards. Awards will be given to top teams and individuals.
Our goal is to provide a competitive event that also focuses on education. On all non-reasons
classes the 2009 ISU Livestock Judging Team will critique the class as well as give officials and cuts. In addition, teams will be grouped together therefore coaches will be able to visit with their teams for instruction following non-reasons classes. Reasons classes will not be critiqued as we would like to have the students to share their own thoughts and opinions in the reasons room. Following oral reasons coaches will be given written comments on their team’s reasons as well as scores from the officials.

Registration will be held in the Farm Bureau Pavilion in Kildee Hall on the ISU campus the morning of April 25th between 7:30am and 8:30am. The contest will begin at 9:00am.
Please find the enclosed team registration form for pre-registration. Entry fees are $40 per team and/or $10 per individual, and can be paid either with the return of the registration form or during registration the morning of the contest. Lunch is included in the entry fee for students. Pre-entry would be much appreciated. We will have Senior (9th -12th Grade) and Junior (8th Grade and under) divisions for teams and individuals.

State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council (SIYAC) Currently Accepting Applications

Des Moines, IA—The State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council is currently accepting applications for the 2009-2010 school year from Iowa students who will be enrolled in high school next year. Deadline for applications is March 13th, 2009. Consideration for selection includes; age and grade level (09-10’), geographical location, leadership experience, community and school involvement, and a letter of recommendation from an adult who can attest to your abilities and potential. Next year marks the 9th year of SIYAC representing Iowa’s youth as a statewide advisory council.

Over the past year, SIYAC has transitioned from the State of Iowa Youth Action Committee to the State of Iowa Youth Advisory Council. SIYAC members have worked hard this year to set the foundation and build strong relationships for the upcoming years. Being a SIYAC member will give you numerous opportunities for trainings and youth engagement opportunities, connections with other statewide organizations and youth, connecting with state legislators as a voice for Iowa’s youth and will require you attend quarterly meetings in Des Moines.

This past year SIYAC has formed a strong partnership with the Iowa Department of Education’s Team Nutrition program to host Youth in Action for a Healthy Iowa workshops in Ames this past fall and in Creston, Davenport, Cedar Rapids, and Alta this spring. The workshops aim to address real problems and implement realistic solutions facing wellness, nutrition, and physical activity concerns in Iowa’s schools and communities. Mini-grants of $500 are offered to participating schools to implement a project in their community.

Background Information
SIYAC is a non-partisan youth advisory council created in 2001 by former Governor Tom Vilsack. SIYAC consists of no more than 21 youth from across Iowa, representing a diversity of thoughts and ideas. The purpose of SIYAC is to:

Create open dialogue between policy makers and youth to shape and refine policies and practices to improve youth directed services.
Engage youth in their state and community to improve personal investment and likelihood of remaining in Iowa.
Increase the demand of local and statewide voice for youth by highlighting important issues facing young Iowans.

When is the last day to purchase tickets at this discounted rate?

Yes, You must order the tickets online to receive the discounted rate.

How do I receive the tickets?
The only way to receive these tickets is to have them mailed to you. Timing should not be an issue with the last day to purchase tickets being Feb. 26th.

How will I be able to get the drink, hot dog and t-shirt?
You will receive two tickets for every one admission you purchase. One ticket will be your admission ticket and the other will be your coupon for the hot dog, drink and t-shirt (please note that this coupon looks like an admission ticket, so read carefully). NOTE: You must pick up your t-shirt prior to getting your hot dog and drink because the concession vendors will take that ticket in exchange for your food. Once you pick up your t-shirt, we will mark on your ticket that you have received it.

Where do I pick up my Cyclone/4-H t-shirt?
The Iowa 4-H Foundation will have a booth right inside the South doors of Hilton Coliseum. You may pick up your t-shirts right before the game. You may also make prior arrangements to pick up the t-shirts during the week prior to the game at the State 4-H office in Ames. How will you know my size for the t-shirt?

When you pick up your group’s t-shirts at the game, this will make it a quick and easy process for everyone. (please make sure to reference whether it is a youth or adult size)

Where should we sit at the game?
You are welcome to sit anywhere in general admission, however, we recommend that 4-Hers sit in sections 225-228 so that you may get to know other 4-Hers from across the state. This will be directly above the location of the 4-H booth inside the south doors to Hilton Coliseum and very easy to find.

I want to thank you for your time and talents and sharing them with Iowa Homeless Youth Centers. Your time and talents allow us to expand our programming and stretch our resources.

I would like your support for Reggie’s Sleepout! There are two ways you can help out in 2008 and help make this event a success!

First, you can help out by volunteering at the 2008 Third annual Reggie’s Sleepout. Attached is the Reggie’s Sleepout volunteer sign-up. AMES, Iowa -- Iowa 4-H youth are competent, confident, caring and connected, and exhibit strong character. And now there is nationwide research to prove it.
A recent Tufts University study shows that 4-H’ers contribute more to their families and communities, achieve higher grades in school and are more likely to go to college than youth who are not in 4-H, or even youth who participate in other out-of-school programs.
In addition, youth involved in 4-H lead healthier, more productive lives, are less likely to suffer from depression and are less likely to participate in at-risk behaviors like drinking and smoking, said Iowa State University Extension youth development specialist Keli Tallman, who leads program evaluation and research for the Iowa 4-H Youth Development program.
“These positive aspects continue with 4-H youth long-term — throughout their adolescence — and likely will continue into adulthood,” Tallman said.
Iowa 4-H’ers agree. According to former Palo Alto County 4-H’er Kara Strand, a current Iowa State University student, “Now I realize that 4-H really was shaping me into the person I am today. I met lifetime friends, gained leadership and communication skills, and learned about responsibility, interviewing and organizational skills. I would never replace my 4-H years for anything because they have shown to be very valuable to me now that I am in college.”
Added ISU student Krista Frazee, of Montgomery County, “Through 4-H activities, I have learned the qualities and attributes that it takes to become an effective leader and team member. 4-H has helped prepare me for life after high school and college in ways that no other organization could.”
The Tufts study is the first-ever longitudinal research measuring the characteristics of positive youth development. Researchers polled more than 4,400 youth involved in a variety of after-school activities and 2,800 parents from 34 states to measure the impact personal and social factors were having on young people’s development. After years of research, they concluded that exposing youth to high levels of positive youth development — like those found in 4-H — will help kids develop competence, confidence, character and compassion for others. In addition, youth will have better and more sustained connections with peers and adults and will be more likely to contribute to their communities, their families and themselves.
Tallman noted three key findings of the long-term effects of 4-H participation:
Youth who spend more time in 4-H are more likely to experience positive youth development and contribute than peers involved in non-4-H programs.
4-H youth are 3.5 times more likely to contribute to themselves, their families and their communities, and 1.5 times more likely to show the highest levels of positive youth development.
Involvement in youth development programs like 4-H increases a young person’s potential of doing well. The study notes that the odds of 4-H youth in eighth grade expecting to go to college are 1.6 times higher than the odds for comparison youth.
But none of the findings surprised Tallman.
“Each year we receive numerous stories of Iowa 4-H’ers contributing to their families and communities,” she said.
For example, a Butler County 4-H’er took time away from cleaning up his own family’s total loss from the Parkersburg tornado to sand bag near Clarksville to help prevent flooding, said Kendra Crooks, ISU Extension youth development specialist who serves Butler County. “He wanted to be able to assist others in need and help them prevent damage despite the hardships he and his family were personally experiencing from their total loss of family home, farm, vehicles and business.”
4-H’ers in northwest Iowa gathered art supplies for kids in after-school programs in Cedar Rapids that had been devastated by the 2008 floods. “Some of the supplies are being used to support art therapy as a way to address the affected young people’s frustration, anger and fear after the flooding,” said Ann Torbert, an ISU Extension youth development specialist who serves the Cedar Rapids area.
The Cedar Rapids Girl Scouts and The Arc, an organization that works with children with special needs, lost supplies and equipment when the building they share was flooded. A 4-H family in Des Moines spearheaded the collection of donations and gathered supplies to replace much of what was lost, Torbert said.
The Tufts research also supports data from the 2007 Iowa 4-H Youth Citizenship, Leadership and Communication self-assessment, Tallman noted.
“Iowa 4-H club members most commonly indicated that 4-H helped them gain citizenship skills by being involved in service learning projects to improve their communities. They gained leadership skills by setting their own goals, and they gained communication skills by learning to express their ideas and speaking and writing effectively,” she said.

Chet Culver has officially proclaimed Oct. 5-11, 2008, as National 4-H Week in Iowa. 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization, serving more than 6 million young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H Million Trees Project
4-H clubs and members are invited to participate in the 4-H Million Trees (4HMT) project. Members of the Belmont and Pacifica (California) 4-H Clubs launched the 4HMT project, a large-scale service-learning project with the goal to plant 1,000,000 trees across the United States to beautify America, absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide, and combat global climate change. The project founders hope that every one of the approximately 90,000 4-H clubs and units in the U.S. will participate in this community service, and plant at least a dozen native trees in their areas during the current 4-H year. They hope that clubs will accept their invitation and adopt the project so members can enjoy the satisfaction of joining with millions of fellow 4-Hers to make a big difference in the world.

Youth 9th – 12th grades can be part of the effort in forming a Central Area 4-H Council. An area council is like a county council but it is made up of 4-H youth from an area of seventeen central area counties.

To keep the momentum in forming an area council a fall retreat is planned at the State 4-H Camp near Madrid, November 8th – 9th , 1:00 p.m. – 11:00 a.m.. Since the area council is just getting organized you do not need to apply. However, if you are interested in being a part of an area council contact the Extension Office at 515-957-5771 for registration information.

Registration deadline is October 24th and cost $10. The registration fee covers lodging and meal. Once you are signed up a confirmation letter will be sent.

Are you looking for a fun training and networking opportunity for 4-H volunteers and staff? The 2008 North Central Region Volunteer Forum is scheduled for November 6 – 8, in Columbus, Ohio. Every year, over 400 4-H volunteers, youth, and staff from twelve states gather to learn new and practical ideas to help their clubs through fun, hands on workshops. Iowa volunteers who attend Forum tell us they return re-energized and with new skills and ideas to help them have a successful club year.

Des Moines, IA – With a goal of making the voice of youth heard in the State of Iowa, the State of Iowa Youth Action Committee (SIYAC) is now recruiting for its 8th year of fulfilling that purpose. SIYAC works with legislators, state agencies, and other statewide organizations to raise ideas & questions relating to youth issues SIYAC members and their constituents face.

“SIYAC is the voice of the youth in Iowa. It is youth empowerment, a powerful, positive force for positive changes in Iowa.” –Jeralyn Westercamp, SIYAC Chair

The State of Iowa Youth Action Committee or SIYAC (pronounced sigh-yak), is a committee that was chartered into existence in May of 2001 by Governor Tom Vilsack. SIYAC members are chosen through an essay and interview process each spring and come from all parts of the state. This year SIYAC is expanding from 16 to 21 members and is still accepting applications for the 2008-2009 school year. SIYAC is seeking applicants from western Iowa, northeast and southeast Iowa as well.

This past year, SIYAC focused on ways to reduce the rising rates in childhood obesity. Their work in partner with other health-related entities saw the passage of the Healthy Kids Act which requires the Department of Education to adopt rules establishing nutritional content standards for foods and beverages sold or provided on school grounds in public and non-public schools. The bill also requires students to engage in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity per day. In 2008-2009, SIYAC is excited to continue their partnership with the Iowa Department of Education in the sponsoring of a youth forum focusing on the promotion of physical activity and healthy behaviors. Past successful partnerships resulted in mandatory guidance counselors in every school district, anti-bullying legislation, lowering the age of poll workers to sixteen, and state-wide keg registration. SIYAC continues to work towards strengthening local youth civic engagement efforts.

A friend of mine (Peggy Nitchel) from the Ames Jaycees is looking at doing a number of articles on 4-H and 4-H families in Warren and East Polk County (she’s an editor and writer with a couple of newspapers covering communities in your areas)…

Anyways, the stories she wants to profile is how the high costs of fuel and feed are affecting 4-H’ers and their families leading to the county fairs. She was thinking about those with livestock projects, but this would be a neat opportunity to share how broad 4-H is, and how transportation costs impact our other project areas – like clothing, photography, woodworking, etc. Plus, there should be a side bar about how people can help with scholarships or something. She’d also like to do a profile of a 4-H family (or families) that was affected by the flood; again we’re looking at ways to raise that long-term awareness to encourage people to help…

If you know of families that might be willing to share their stories please let me know; I can either contact them with a brief introduction, or you could do that, and we can then get the info onto Peggy. Stories would run in the next couple of weeks.

The decision has been made by the Fairboard to move up the time of the Advanced Cattle Feeders show from 11:00 AM to 10:00 AM on the morning of Friday July 18th at the Polk County Fair. It was discussed at the June 18th meeting at the recommendation of a 4-H member, and was approved by superintendant Mike Cory. This move was due to the difficulty that exhibitors had in exhibiting in both this show and the Livestock Judging Contest.

Premier Exhibitor Contests for State Fair beef, sheep, and swine exhibitors

Now that the State Fair is less than 50 days away, and entries are due to our office in 20 days, it is time to start focusing some attention to it. One of the things that we are promoting this year is our Premier Exhibitor Contests for our beef, sheep, and swine exhibitors. This program is designed to recognize 4-H beef, sheep and swine project members who can articulate their understanding about the future of the animal industry and their knowledge about animal production.

This contest is open to all 4-H state fair exhibitors who have completed their junior or senior year in high school.

Scholarship money is awarded in the following amounts:

Beef:
1st - $1,000
2nd - $500
3rd - $250

Swine:
1st - $1,000
2nd - $500
3rd - $250

Sheep
1st - $500
2nd - $300
3rd - $200

A composite score will be computed from the following five elements:
1. Showmanship (15%)
2. Best showring ribbon earned (10%)
3. Interview with producers, ISU Extension staff, or industry representatives (25%)
4. Exam on production (25%)
5. Skillathon (might include: reading a medication label or feed tag, identifying cuts of meat, balancing a ration, identifying feed stuffs, etc.) (25%)

All activities will take place at the Iowa State Fair

4-H’ers may compete in only one species contest per year

A contestant who has previously won a scholarship is not eligible to compete in that specie’s contest again, but may compete in another species

They can sign up on the State Fair Entry Form or at the Iowa State Fair during check-in for their species

4-H Camp Update

The following is updated weather-related camp information we wanted to share.

#1 The Iowa 4-H Center has emergency procedures in place to prepare us for situations like severe weather. The Iowa 4-H Center is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) every year. They require us to have detailed written emergency procedures. Our 26 full-time summer camp staff also go through two weeks of intensive training before each summer camp season that covers our emergency procedures, CPR & First Aid training, practice drills, and the location/use of emergency equipment around camp. Rental groups and visitors at the camp also have a camp staff member assigned to their group as a host while they are here and this person is responsible for orientating each group upon arrival with our emergency procedures and are to alert them to any severe weather and assist them in following our procedures. We do not have a tornado siren at camp, but we do have other means of effective emergency communication. Each lodge at the Iowa 4-H Center is equipped with an intercom phone system to communicate emergency information. We also have three weather radios at camp that are monitored closely during the day and staff are assigned for night watch to answer phone calls, watch the weather, and put our emergency procedures into action if needed. Staff also carry portable walkie-talkie radios with them so we can reach everyone with necessary alerts. In addition we also have a large bell at camp that we ring three times in a row repeatedly to alert groups to seek shelter. If there is a threat of weather we keep groups in activities in or near buildings so they are close to shelter if the weather worsens. Our rainy day activities are quite popular and help campers pass the time while waiting inside and we try our best to keep the campers busy having fun and not worried about the weather. The staff are trained to remain calm and proceed as needed to keep the campers safe. Due to the size of our camp and the distance between buildings, our primary weather emergency shelter location is the bathroom areas of the 5 main lodges in each camp village. The campers are told to gather inside the concrete walls of the bathrooms because they are the innermost part of the buildings and away from windows. In a last resort the staff are told to stay in the cabins, get in the middle of the room, and cover the group with mattresses from the beds. The only basement we have at camp is under our health center (Cedar Lodge), but it is not designed for large groups.

#2 The Iowa 4-H Center is NOT flooded! Yes, we are wet and muddy, but not flooded. Our camp was fortunately built on high ground and we are surrounded by multiple ravines that drain all of the water to the Des Moines River and Richardson’s creek around us.

#3 The Iowa 4-H Center is open and operating as normal. Yes, there are some of our typical summer camp programs that we have to substitute with other activities, but flexibility and “camp” go hand-in-hand. For example: the creek is too high for creek walks but we have been doing day hikes in the woods and out to the wetlands or the pond instead. The river is also too swollen for river canoe trips (but Pack & Paddle camp next week is still on!), so we are canoeing on our camp pond and other local lakes instead. All other camp program areas are open for use, just please send old shoes with your campers because the trails are wet and muddy after it rains.

#4 We just had 1,111.49 tons of new gravel put on the camp road!! Getting to camp from across the state may pose a problem for some of you with road closures in various towns, but all of the roads in and out of camp are very passable and not in any threat of being closed due to excess water. The only road even close to camp that is closed is Highway 30 between Ogden and Boone and they have re-routed traffic to E-57 that is actually closer to camp. If you have concerns about road closures, please visit this DOT website: http://www.iowaroadconditions.org/. #5 The Ames day camp pick-up and drop off location will be changed from Brookside Park to Emma McCarthy Lee Park off of Ross Road if Ames closes the roads around Brookside Park again. For now, please continue to use the Brookside Park location. If we get enough lead time, we will try to email all day camp parents about road closures, but if roads are closed overnight, we will call you from the day camp vans to alert you of the location change. NOTICE: Right before we sent this message out we were informed that Brookside Park in Ames has recently been closed due to flooding, so our Thursday afternoon June 12th pick-up location WILL BE at Lee Park today! Finally…Our staff realize the trust you are placing in us to keep your children safe while they are here at the Iowa 4-H Center and we take our responsibility very seriously. John has children of his own and I am expecting my first child in September, so we do understand the concerns you have shared with us through the calls and emails we have answered so far. Hi, I am wondering if any of you know of any 4H groups who might like to help sell raffle tickets on the PONY EXPRESS HORSE RAFFLE? Proceeds go to penefit Easter Seals. The winner may take the horse or the $2,000 cash offer, so they almost sell themselves. Several groups do this for us, then the kids can use or turn in the hours as a community service project. I would be more than glad to attend any meetings, etc to present this to the groups and/or answer any questions that may arise. If the groups have any upcoming events between now & the state fair, it may be possible for us to bring the horse & let the group display the horse while selling tickets. AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa Beef Center is co-sponsoring a pasture walk in Milo, Iowa, in collaboration with the Iowa Forage and Grasslands Council, Iowa State University Extension in Warren County, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Warren County Cattlemen’s Association. The walk will take place June 24, 2008, at the Ohnemus Farms, located at 21392 G58 Highway in Milo, Iowa.
The event, which will begin at 6 p.m., will include speakers discussing a variety of topics and a tour of the OhnemusFarms grazing systems. Beef producers, landowners and agribusiness professionals will benefit from the discussionsled by the event’s speakers, including Duane Ohnemus, local producer; Joe Sellers, Iowa Beef Center beef specialist; and Brian Peterson and Nick Morrell from the NRCS.
Discussion topics will range from exploring methods to extend grazing, to managing grass height. Attendees are also encouraged to bring specific questions they have regarding grazing management to receive assistance from these industry experts.
Sellers, one of the event’s speakers, believes the pasture walk, and events like it, are bringing Iowans the knowledge they need at a crucial time for the beef industry. While it’s always important for those involved in beef production to learn money-saving techniques, conditions in Iowa have made this information that much more vital.
“Iowa is rapidly losing pasture and hay acres, and feed costs are rising, so it is critical to manage forages we do haveeffectively,” Sellers said.

The Iowa Beef Center at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, was established in 1996 with the goal of supporting the growth and vitality of the state’s beef cattle industry. It's official 4-H is good for kids

AMES, Iowa -- You may assume that adolescents are inherently “at risk” and try to “fix” their problems. Or you may take another perspective –- positive youth development – believing that youth have assets and can become constructive contributors to society. That’s the perspective of ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. A new national study confirms that positive youth development and 4-H get better results.
The Tufts’ 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development has found that youth involved in high-quality, structured programs during out-of-school-time, such as those offered by ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development in every county in Iowa, are more likely to experience positive youth development.
“This study confirms that youth involved in 4-H are leaders, contribute to their communities and are civically engaged, which strengthens communities,” said Keli Tallman, an ISU Extension 4-H youth development state specialist.
The Tufts’ study is a first-of-its-kind, longitudinal study measuring the impact personal and social factors have on youth as they develop. Findings reveal that all youth have the capacity to thrive, regardless of where they live, their family situations, their socioeconomic status, races and genders.
Study findings also show that quality and quantity matter when it comes to youth involvement in structured, out-of-school-time programs, Tallman said. The more often youth are involved in high-quality youth development programs, the more they and their communities benefit.
“We’re excited about this research and will be applying what we learn to Iowa 4-H,” said Chuck Morris, director of ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development. “We want to ensure that our 4-H program continues to provide opportunities that will help our youth become successful, contributing members of their communities.”
The Tufts’ study further shows that, in order for youth to experience success, communities, families and schools need to provide access to programs such as 4-H as well as provide sustained adult interaction and mentoring.
The 4-H study, conducted by Tufts University and sponsored by the National 4-H Council, involved more than 4,000 youth and 2,000 parents from 25 states to measure the impact personal and social factors have on a young person’s development.

There are two upcoming opportunities to get involved with Des Moines tree projects. Trees Forever will be partnering with City Arborist Skip Moore and Lower Beaver Neighborhood leader Brian Millard to plant about 45 street trees in that neighborhood on Thursday, May 29 at 5:30 pm. The planting will be along Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway north of Euclid from Clarkson to Madison; bring a shovel and gloves if you have them. Meet at the intersection of Martin Luther King and Clarkson. If you have any questions please contact me or Brian Millard at Bmillarddsm@aol.com.

Secondly, Trees Forever will be working with the city’s Public Works Department, Park and Rec. department, and DNR Urban Forester Randy Cook to conduct a sample street tree inventory this summer. Three evenings of training will be held on June 16, 17, and 18. Please see the attached invitation for more information. No experience is needed, just a desire to learn about and improve Des Moines’ urban forest. Any questions can be directed to me. We would love to have you participate in both or either event. Marion County Pony Express Horse Show Rescheduled.

The Marion County Pony Express group had to reschedule their hors show & queen contest because of wet, cold & rainy conditons. It will be held Sunday June 8th at the Marion County Fairgrounds Arena. This show will not be cancelled. In case of rain show will be moved to an indoor arena located at 1131 Lucas Street, Knoxville.

Used Show Box for Sale

We have a show box that our daughters had when they had 4H show cattle in 4H many, many years ago. It is not a large one but would be a nice one to start a young 4H'er off with. We only want $20 for it. The "new" owner would have to sand off the Pence name on top and give it a fresh coat of paint. It has a sliding tray inside and has two handles for easy carrying.
